Theme: Promoting a Sustainable Life for Thriving Communities

Date and Time: 11th April 2024 | 13:00-14:00 (BRT)

Event Description: In July 2020, the Sustainable Health Equity Movement (SHEM) was launched, dedicated to promoting sustainable health equity as an ethical principle guiding all national and international economic, social, and environmental policies. Since its inception, the movement has issued statements, participated in various UN System meetings, and raised awareness about the urgent need to address two intertwined challenges: social inequality and the climate crisis.

At this event, two of SHEM’s founding figures, Dr. Juan Garay, Head of Cooperation at the European Union’s Mission in Cuba and a professor of Global Health at the National School of Public Health in Spain, and Dr. Paulo Buss, Director of the Center for Global Health at The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ) and Full Member of the Brazilian National Academy of Medicine since 2005, will analyze SHEM’s trajectory and discuss its next steps. The discussion will focus on the challenges of achieving sustainable health equity for the current and future generations.

This matter is particularly urgent given the evident interconnectedness of peace, well-being, and health outcomes in the face of ongoing conflicts. Initiatives aimed at conflict resolution, social cohesion, and the establishment of just governance structures are integral components of a broader strategy to ensure sustainable health equity. In the pursuit of a healthier and more just society, the imperative is clear: fostering peace is the path toward a future where the right to health is universally upheld, a commitment SHEM has maintained since its foundation.

Theme: Fostering the Development of the Right Competencies within Tomorrow’s Health Workforce

Date and Time: 12th April 2024 | 08:00-11:00 (GMT-5)

Event Description: Mental health is an integral component of general health that significantly impacts people’s quality of life and well-being. Both the rates of mental disorders and the years lost to disability (YLDs) they generate have been increasing exponentially in recent years. Historically, anxious and depressive symptomatology is the most prevalent in the world. The World Health Organization’s report on mental health in 2023 ratifies this behavior and identifies that the Americas region has the highest prevalence of anxiety problems and the second highest rate of depressive disorders of all World Health Organization regions. Additionally, between 2000 and 2019, it was the only region that increased its age-adjusted suicide rate by 17% (PAHO, 2023). Overall, mental disorders are the leading cause of APD, accounting for one in six cases worldwide. In Colombia, about 70% of cases are not diagnosed or treated promptly (MinSalud, 2015).

Objective of the event: To provide a space for reflection and dialogue between representatives of the global society, the governmental, academic, and community sectors on the needs and challenges of mental health training in Colombia and Latin America, to influence the formulation of public policies.

Panel: Guiding question: What are the needs for mental health training in the face of the challenges of our societies in Colombia and Latin America?

Pan American Health Organization: Luz María Salazar. National Mental Health Consultant, Health Systems and Services Area.
Ministry of Health and Social Protection: Bibian Yiseth Moreno. Integrated Management Group for Mental Health.

Event Description: In alignment with The Global Public Health Week, the Public Health Association of South Africa (PHASA) initiated virtual dialogues to discuss community-led health promotion, aligned with national strategies. From April 8-12, sessions on public health paradigms, global health governance, mental wellbeing, sustainable living, and developing healthcare competencies will be held. The sessions will run daily from 10:00 to 12:00 (GMT + 2).

Monday 8 April: Rethinking Public Health Paradigms in South Africa

Community participation, behaviour analysis, and ecology, crucial for past public health challenges, emphasized interdisciplinary approaches and direct engagement with populations. This prompts the question: which paradigms will effectively tackle future health issues both nationally and globally?

Tuesday 9, April:Enhancing and Democratizing Governance in Global Health from the South African Perspective

Addressing health inequities globally and within nations surpasses health sector capabilities and national actions, necessitating political solutions on a global scale. Transnational norms and policies act as political determinants maintaining these disparities. How do we enhance and democratize governance in South Africa to reduce inequalities and foster peace?

Wednesday, 10 April: Putting Mental Wellbeing on the Health Agenda in South Africa

With mental disorders among the top global disease burdens—970 million affected in 2019, mainly by anxiety and depression—impacting all life aspects and leading to challenges in education and employment, it’s crucial for governments and the global health community to implement effective prevention and treatment. Where are we as a country in this endeavour?

Sustainable development, harmonizing economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection, ensures future generations aren’t compromised. It relies on communities, where collaboration on resources, knowledge, and innovation addresses challenges for a sustainable future. The question remains, “How do we foster these community collaborations to promote sustainable life for thriving communities?”

Friday, 12 April: Fostering the Development of the Right Competencies within Tomorrow’s Health Workforce in South Africa

Health professions education develops essential competencies in healthcare professionals, including patient-centred care, interdisciplinary teamwork, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and informatics use. These areas aim to enhance patient care, integrate research, improve safety and quality, and leverage technology in healthcare. The critical questions are: Where do our healthcare training programs stand in nurturing these competencies? Which competencies are pivotal for our health system? How can we cultivate these skills in our future health workforce?

Theme: Rethinking Public Health Paradigms

Date and Time: 8 April 2024 | all-day GMT+10

Event Description: Pursuing Public Health in the Preindustrial World, 1100-1800, explores public health strategies of mobile, non-urban communities in Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean, and South Asia. It draws from the understanding of Galenic health paradigms and their transmission across regions; and that preindustrial communities recognized, and reacted, to health threats in innovative and population-oriented ways. Our social media campaign highlights the work and profiles of our team members, their papers, and their talks, which span the public health practices of miners, pilgrims, and courts.
